How to find your lucky 5 elements (and lucky colors or numbers) from personal history

Traditionally, the birth chart or BaZi chart is used to find your lucky 5-element. Another less-known way is to look through your personal history in the past. Which years were fortunate for you? Check the related 5 elements of those years. Those are your proven lucky elements.

Once we find out your favorite elements, we can apply the corresponding numbers and colors of the elements to everyday life. We can also look into the future to see which years will have the same lucky elements. Those could be your personal lucky years.

Looking back at your personal lucky years

The first step is to look back at your personal best years in the past. Do any special life events make a year extra lucky? For example, landing a good job, getting a raise, getting married, having a baby, or moving to a new house….

Check the 5 elements of those lucky years

The next step is to find the related five elements of those years. This is based on the Chinese traditional timing system of the 10 heavenly stems and 12 earthly branches. The combination of these creates a 60-year cycle, called 60 Jia Zi years.

Each year has a related 5 elements. Each element lasts for 2 years. See the current 60 years chart and related 5 elements below.

One thing to remember is that all Chinese metaphysics starts the year with the solar term “Li Chun” or “start of Spring”, around February 4th or 5th on the western calendar.

So any major event that happens before February 4th/5th should be considered the previous year.

You can have multiple lucky years in the past, and multiple lucky 5-elements.

The five element cycles

There are generating cycles and controlling cycles in the 5 elements theory. You can use the generating cycle to increase your lucky elements, and avoid controlling cycle elements.

For example, if your lucky element is Wood. You can add more Water or Wood to enhance the Wood element. Avoid Metal and Earth. Both can reduce the energy of Wood elements.
