Chinese people have been following the tradition for thousands of years. Around the lunar new year time, plenty of food is prepared, house cleaned, and mind focused to prepare for the best year ahead.
The lunar new year for the Year of the Ox 2021
The lunar New Year’s Day is February 12, 2021. The New Year’s Eve is February 11, and the Lantern Festival is February 26, 2021.
The preparation actually starts long before the lunar New Year’s Day. Most families started in the lunar December. It is a good time to clean the space, declutter, organize, and decorate. You might want to remove old feng shui cures during this month.
Food preparation is also an important part of this time. Some traditional food takes a long time to prepare, so we start early and make sure we have more than enough for the new year. Food is a symbol of abundance and wealth. We want to have enough food to share with friends and families.
The end of the year is the best time to clean out the old, outdated or broken items. Do a thorough cleaning of the house. Change around furniture and decor to refresh the space.
The Best days to remove and install feng shui cures, enhancers, or Tai Sui plaque/plate
You can install or replace feng shui cures, enhancers, or Tai Sui statue by following a feng shui lunar calendar. The traditional lunar calendar shows the auspicious activities, lucky directions, and conflicting animal sign of the day. Under the auspicious activities, it tells you the best day to install or remove a feng shui cure/enhancer. And try to avoid the day that is conflicting with your animal sign.
Besides following a feng shui calendar, there are 2 special days around the lunar new year for removing and installing feng shui cures/enhancers or Tai Sui plaque/plate.
The first one is on lunar December 24. It is the day of forgiveness. You can move Tai Sui, feng shui items, or other religious objects without worrying about offending any spirit or making mistakes. In 2021, this day is on February 05.
The second date is the Jade Emperor’s birthday, lunar January 09. Since it is a very auspicious day, it is powerful to perform any ritual, setting up cures, enhancers, or a Tai Sui altar. It is on February 20, 2021.
The Jade Emperor’s birthday, Lunar January 9th
There is always a big ceremony and feast for a deity’s birthday. On January 9th, there will be a big celebration in many temples. People offer a variety of food, flower, candle, and pray for a prosperous year.
This is also a good day to do a fasting or avoid eating meat, and take a bath to cleanse body and mind.
The Lunar New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day
The lunar New Year’s Eve is a time for a family gathering, food sharing, and partying. Kids receive red envelopes with money inside. This is also a good day to sweep the floor. It symbolizes sweeping out old energy and ready for the new year.
The first day of the year should be positive. So wear a bright color, visiting friends and relatives, visiting the temple to pray and make wishes. This is a day to avoid sweeping floors so good luck will stay in the house. Avoid fighting, yelling, or breaking any object during the first day of the year.
Lucky directions to travel for the lunar New Year’s Day
The first travel direction of the year is important. Travel to the auspicious directions of New Year’s Day can bring good luck of the year.
For February 12, 2021 (New Year’s Day), the lucky directions include the Southwest and the East. And the lucky time of the day includes 3 to 5 am and 11 am to 5 pm. It is best to walk out of the house during these hours and travel to either East or Southwest direction for good luck.
If you have to go somewhere other than East or Southwest, you can still walk to the East or Southwest first for a short distance, and then change the direction later.

The Lantern Festival (lunar January 15)
The lantern festival marks the last day of the lunar new year celebration. There is also a full moon that night. Traditionally, people eat Yuan Xiao (the rice ball), play riddle games, and light up lanterns with their wishes/prayers written inside.
To light up a lantern is similar to making a new year resolution. You set your intention on what you like to achieve this year. With a clear mind, a clean house, and positive energy, we are ready to start the new year.
