The purpose of an altar at home

Everyone has a different intention for setting up a personal altar at home. We want a place to be away from any distraction, to feel relaxed and calm, and connect with our inner self, or religious diety. It is a place to recharge, reflect, meditate, and feel inspired again.

Selecting your altar location

For a religious altar, there are many traditional rules you can follow. But for a personal spiritual altar, you do not need to feel restricted to all the rules. Your intuition and feeling can tell you the best place for you to relax and unwind.

The 2 very general rules for setting up a religious alter include 1. facing outdoor space such as a window or entrance. It is best to set up the religious statue facing a window or door. That can reduce the chances of attracting negative spirits.

2. Avoid facing or nearby any smelly, dirty, or disrespectful objects such as a toilet, trash can, or recycle bin. Also, avoid any Sha Qi (the harsh negative Qi). For example, some furniture has sharp corners. Avoid the sharp corners pointing to the altar area.

For personal altar, it can be anywhere you feel comfortable. Maybe just a corner of your bedroom, or bedside table. The size is not important.

Location according to feng shui chart

According to Flying Star feng shui, the star number 1, 6, 8, 9 are auspicious. In the 2020 annual feng shui chart, it means Northeast, Southeast, Northwest, and West. These are good locations for setting up a spiritual altar too.

You can also set up some water, tea, flower, or fruit here as an offering to make space extra special. Once the altar is set up, the most important part is to spend some time here regularly. It is the habit that keeps us calm and centered. Enjoy your sacred space!
