14 common exterior Feng Shui issues and solutions

The ideal feng shui

In the traditional Chinese Feng Shui, an ideal house should be in a square or rectangle shape, without any missing corners. Any irregular shape is generally not lucky. Of course, there will be some exceptions depending on the person’s birth chart, landscape, or timing. Even that, the luck is less long-lasting.

The house should be in proportion to the neighbors. Not too tall/big, or too short/small. There should be higher buildings, mountains, or other structures in the back for support, just like a stable Tortoise.

The left Dragon and right Tiger sides should be supporting the house, but not as tall as the backside. The dragon side or the Yang side can be taller with more movement, while the tiger side of the Yin side should be lower and quiet.

The front (the phoenix side) should have an open view, representing the bright and open future. That is the very basis of the ideal feng shui.

Remember the direction of the left and right is based on the front of the house. The front door is like the face of a person. When you are looking out to the front of the house, your left-hand side the dragon side, and the right-hand side is the tiger side.

  1. The house is too close to a cellphone tower or electric pole.

It can affect mental and physical health in a long run. It is harder to concentrate and relax if you have a cellphone tower or electric pole nearby.

The first solution is to install special walls or windows to block the radiation or magnetic emission. This will take some research and construction.

The Feng Shui cure includes the Hulu (Chinese gourd), a Dragon Turtle, or statue of a Rooster because the Rooster eats bugs and worms. The cellphone tower and electric pole shapes like a bug with a lot of legs.

2. The house is close to the industrial chimney

This can present too much Fire energy and cause a bad temper, illness, conflict, or legal issues.

The first solution is to close the window or use a curtain to block the view.

Display Hulu (gourd) to absorb the negative energy and bring good health.

Add more Earth elements such as yellow or brown color, ceramic pots, or crystals.

3. The Water Tower (drug bottle) Sha Qi

If you live in a city or a high-rise building, you probably see these water towers on top of many buildings. The view of many water towers can affect your health because they look like pill bottles.

Display Hulu, Bagua mirror, or just close your window, or block the view with a curtain most of the time.

4. Sharp triangle shape buildings

This can be a triangle-shaped building or a sharp triangle shape on top of the building. If you live in a building like that or have a close view of the building like that, watch out for illness, increased chance of quarrel and accident due to the Fire element shape.

Since this is a Fire element Sha Qi, you can add an Earth element to reduce it. Add more yellow or brown color, ceramic ware, or Jade.

A Bagua mirror facing the triangle building can reflect the negative Qi away from you.

Or close the window or block the view with a curtain to reduce the chance of being affected by the building.

5. A very tall building among short buildings

If you are the only tallest building among many short buildings, it can be a lack of support and loneliness. You might be more distant from your family and friends.

To increase the happy and harmonious energy, you can add a statue of laughing buddha, pictures of family and friends, or natural crystals.

6. A very short building among many tall buildings

This is the opposite of the last problem, a very short or small house among many tall buildings can make you feel lost and stressed out easily. Your career and family life can feel restricted too.

The feng shui idea is to increase the positive energy with Qilin, Pi Xiu, crystals, and good lighting.

7. A house in the junction of a Y-shape road (Scissor Sha Qi)

If your house is in the junction of a Y-shaped road, it looks like an opening scissor right in front of you. This can cause quarrels, accidents, money loss, and health issues.

The first solution is to add big plants or water features (fountain, pond,…) in front of the house to create a barrier and slow down the Qi.

You can also add a Dragon Turtle, Qi Lin, or a pair of Stone lions as protection.

8. A house at the end of the T-junction road

This one is similar to number 7. A long straight road leading to your house creates strong and dangerous Qi just like an arrow. It can create illness, accidents, or emotional problems.

The solution is similar to the number 7 issue above. Add a water feature or plants to slow down the Qi.

A traditional way is to add a “Shi Gan Dang” (Stone cure). The stone can be placed in front of the house so it takes the negative energy instead of the house.

An obsidian crystal is also good at absorbing negative energy.

For protection, set up a Stone Lion, Dragon Turtle, or Qi Lin.

Add big plants or water features such as a small pond or fountain to slow down the Qi flow.

Add a Dragon Turtle, Qi Lin, or Stone Lion for protection.

Set up a “Shi Gan Dang” stone cure in front of the house for protection.

10. The “L, T, or U” shaped buildings

These building shapes tend to have missing corners. This can represent obstacles in business, school, or family life. A square or rectangle shape is traditionally considered the ideal feng shui house.

Add a tall cabinet or furniture near the wall of the missing corner.

Add crystals, dragon turtle, or 5-emperors coins to increase the energy of the space.

13. The windows are too close to your neighbor’s windows

In feng shui, this means decreased wealth and unstable luck.

You can add a curtain to block the view, or keep the window closed most of the time.

Add plants by the window to add separation and define the space.

Add a Hulu to absorb negative Qi.

14. House facing the gap between 2 tall buildings

This is more common in big cities. Two tall buildings next to each other can create a long narrow space. This tends to create too much wind or uncontrollable Qi. If this gap is facing your house or window, your health and career life can be affected.

You can add a Bagua mirror facing the gap area to reflect the Qi back.

Add plants by the window or door to create a barrier and slow down the Qi.

Add a Stone Lion, Qi Lin, or Pi Xiu for the protection of your space.

The Feng Shui cure placement

For the Feng Shui cures such as a Bagua mirror, Qi Lin, or Pi Xiu, it is best to have a ceremony performed first before setting it up in place. This can be done by professionals from a temple or do it yourself with good intention.

The simplified process includes cleaning the product physically with water or gentle detergent first. Select a lucky date to set up the feng shui cure in place. The basic of the date selection is to pick a day without any conflict to your animal sign or location of the house.

The last step is to recite your intention, the purpose of the feng shui cure or enhancer, and the desired result. The ceremony can be complicated or simple depends on your situation and preference.
